Why Dark Sky Lighting?

As of late, many communities have  been following the trend of dark sky compliance. This is because the dark-sky movement is striving to bring back the night sky. So, what exactly is dark sky compliance and what is the dark-sky movement? The purpose of both is to reduce light pollution.

Dark sky lighting is a way to keep the sky dark by fully shielding the light bulb on the top and sides so the light is directed downward rather than towards to top of the fixture or its sides. Dark sky community requiremest are primarily meant to reduce light pollution thus maintaining a “dark sky” so as to better appreciate the moon, stars, various constellations, etc.

Do Your Homework!

Localities and communities may vary greatly in what is considered “acceptable” dark sky compliance.  For this reason, it is best to research the township regulations or home owner’s associaton’s guidelines prior to purchasing your lighting fixtures.

Unique Iron Lighting is NOT part of the International Dark Sky Association (IDS) and our fixture do NOT include such labeling.  That said, many communities do not accept all fixtures even when they carry this labeling.  So, don’t assume that just because your fixture is listed with the IDS label that it will automatically be approved by your local community.

Most of our fixtures can be modified in order to meet your dark sky lighting needs.  We do this by extending the hoods of many of our fixtures, changing the lamping types, integrating LEDs and drivers, ets.  We strive to provide fixtures that will meet your particular community’s guidelines while also designing a fixture that is both functional and aesthetic.  Rest assured that unless otherwise stated our fixtures are UL listed.  Contact us for more information.
